support that challenge, the Research and Development Team is
currently seeking a Breeder - Flower in Gilroy, CA. As a Breeder
you will take ownership/leadership of different breeding programs
that focused on the Syngenta Flowers' 15-year strategy, by
preparing and executing breeding trails in collaboration with
product managers and consequently analyze the data from those
trails. In that regard, you will be responsible for the development
of inbred lines and hybrid varieties of assigned crops (ex:
Geranium, Petunia, Calibrachoa, Lobelia, ---) that meet the
performance targets set by the Market Segment Leads with input from
the marketing, supply chain, technical, production, legal and other
development teams. Accountabilities Maintain and develop a product
development portfolio in line with the market segment targets of
the breeding profiles using different research disciplines.
Contribute to crop strategy and product profiles development.
Communicate effectively and regularly with peers and supervisors
regarding status of projects and work activities, raise awareness
of issues that could affect meeting project objectives and business
goals. Participate actively in discovery projects for novel trait
introgression through accelerate breakthrough innovations by
collaborating with Trait Development Leads and Genetic Scientists.
Implement data driven decision in every part of the breeding
program. Evaluate pre-candidates against defined product profiles
and describe progress. Manage germplasm diversity within the
program and identify opportunities for expanding program germplasm
base. Set up long-term breeding schemes, through set up of annual
trials planning and maintenance of proper breeding administration.
Work closely with the operations teams on the establishment and
execution of breeding and pollination trials, elite, purity, and
product comparison trials. Assist with nursery harvest and
processing activities to improve quality of results. Perform all
tasks in a manner compliant with and in support of all safety and
stewardship related company policies and practices, including
completing all required training courses. Qualifications
Requirements PhD with at least 3-5 years of experience in plant
breeding preferred in either a commercial or academic setting,
and/or MS with 10+ years' experience. Variety development
experience and/or knowledge of culture and genetics of ornamental
crops is highly valued. In-depth knowledge of plant breeding,
genetics, statistics and field design, population genetics,
quantitative genetics, phenomics, plant biology/pathology and
marker breeding techniques. Strong familiarity with technology
applications that support and accelerate breeding such as data
analytics, imaging, environmental analysis. Experienced in project
management in a team-oriented atmosphere. Preferred Requirements
Ability to generate reports/charts/summary tables to communicate
results and progress. Excellent computer skills and proficiency
with MS Office and corporate software. Ability to lead and motivate
others to high performance. Ability to effectively organize, manage
and assign workload in order to meet project goals and deadlines.
Ability to work independently with minimal day-today supervision.
Ability to manage resources to achieve objectives and remain within
budget. Ability to work in international setting. Regional and
international travel required to trial and nursery locations, and
to other supporting activities. Ability to work under adverse
